Post-Inflammatory Pigmentation

Natural skin pigmentation provides lots of benefits to the skin including protection from the damaging rays of the sun. It slows down the ageing process in men and women, however it may be a source of skin problems for some people. The post inflammatory pigmentation problems can start especially with melanin which is the chemical that determines the colour of the skin- the more melanin an individual possess, the darker he or she becomes.  When the cells that produce melanin are either damaged or over-stimulated, then the cells either produce too much or too little melanin, in a case where too much melanin are produced, the result is darker patches and discolouration developing on the skin.

Though Post Inflammatory skin pigmentation can occur in the skin of different kinds of people, however the infection is much more prevalent in places like Africa, Asia, Latin and those from Indian background. In most cases, the areas often affected on the skin by Post inflammatory pigmentation are areas which have been injured or previously inflamed and when the dark patches remaining after an inflammatory pigmentation have been tested then the treated area becomes scratchy, thereby leading to burns, bruises and cuts. An inflammation or injury to the skin may result in a breakout from the skin and that cause rashes and burns.

Post Inflammatory pigmentation is not only caused by acne and pimples, some other conditions such as sunburns, and from surgical demabrasions .  Post Inflammatory Pigmentation has been described as a problem arising from an underlying factor , hence its treatment is often performed by dealing with the underlying causes of the Inflammation.

There are several options available in the treatment of Post Inflammatory Pigmentation. Hydroquinone treatment, Glycolic acids, Retinoids, Azelaic acids, Chemical peeling, Micro-dermabrasion and several others.

Micro-dermabrasion treatment of Post Inflammatory pigmentation is a pure cosmetic procedure often conducted by a dermatologist. Some fine crystals of a peel are sprayed on the affected skin region and in so doing the  pigmented region is scraped away. Chemical peel treatment of Post Inflammatory Pigmentation is closely related to micro-dermabrassion techniques but chemical peels are used in removing persistent pigmentations, most dermatologist recommend up to 6 peels to clear off completely the pigmentations. This is one of the most expensive treatments for Post Inflammatory skin pigmentation.

Glycolic acid and Azelaic acid are prescription or over-the-counter medications which are recommended at a regulatory dosage for the treatment of Post Inflammatory Skin Pigmentation.
